Despite Du Plessis missing an earlier opportunity, Whittaker acknowledges the complexities of the division and applauds Du Plessis for earning his place in the championship bout against Sean Strickland. After Du Plessis secured his No. 1 contender status with a Round 2 TKO against Whittaker at UFC 290, circumstances led to the title shot going to Sean Strickland, who eventually dethroned Israel Adesanya. The subsequent Chimaev vs. Usman fight further stirred the division's dynamics. However, with Chimaev's injury, Du Plessis now steps into the spotlight. Whittaker recognizes the challenges in the division, emphasizing the unpredictability caused by fighter availability and recent win/loss outcomes in the top five. Despite the twists, Whittaker commends Du Plessis for seizing the opportunity, especially after his victory over Whittaker himself. Reflecting on the timing of recent title fights, Whittaker underscores the importance of readiness and skills, citing Sean Strickland as a prime example. As Du Plessis gears up for UFC 297 in Toronto, Whittaker's endorsement adds weight to the anticipation of a compelling middleweight showdown. *(Source: MMAJUNKIE)* *(Image Courtesy of MMAJUNKIE)* ## Comment ### TAGS [MMA](https://blog.millions.co/tag/mma) [Dricus du Plessis](https://blog.millions.co/tag/dricus-du-plessis) ## Related articles ##### [Mario Hernandez Faces Tough Challenge in Long Beach Showdown](https://blog.millions.co/mario-hernandez-faces-tough-challenge-in-long-beach-showdown) December 5, 2023 Get ready for an intense night of boxing as Mario Hernandez (10-4-1, 3 KOs), hailing from Santa...
