IBJJF's The Crown Recap: Tainan, Fellipe, Luiza Impress In Debut Event

In a historic night for the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), six champions emerged triumphant at the inaugural IBJJF Crown, held over the weekend in Long Beach, CA. Among the standout performers were Sam Nagai, Tainan Dalpra, Fellipe Andrew, Erich Munis, Luiza Monteiro, and Gabrieli Pessanha.

The event, designed to showcase the best of gi grappling, witnessed intense competition with each winner claiming the grand prize of $15,000. As the IBJJF looks ahead, plans for expanding divisions and providing more opportunities for athletes are already in the works.

Strategic defense played a pivotal role in many of the matches, creating a night of closely contested bouts. Sam "The Samurai" Nagai, having an exceptional year, emerged as champion after defeating Diego Oliveira and Isaac Doederlein in tightly contested matches. The middleweight division saw Tainan Dalpra secure victory with the only submission of the medal matches, a triangle against Andy Murasaki. Tainan's determination and performance were evident as he aimed for a more decisive finish.

Fellipe Andrew, dominating in the heavyweight category, secured his success with a submission win over Francisco Lo and an 11x0 victory against Gustavo Batista. Fellipe's aggressive approach rightfully earned him The Crown. Erich Munis claimed victory in the absence of a third-place finisher, showcasing his open guard prowess.

Luiza Monteiro, who admitted contemplating retirement, decided to continue her competitive journey and emerged victorious at The Crown. Known for her aggression, Luiza mounted and took the back of Nathalie Ribeiro in the finals. The event also featured exciting matches with Brianna Ste-Marie and Janaina Lebre in the first round. Although Ste-Marie couldn't complete the bracket due to injury, Lebre secured third place.

Gabrieli Pessanha showcased her skills, winning two consecutive matches against formidable opponents Amy Campo and Tayane Porfirio. Pessanha's well-timed techniques, including a near sweep and a collar drag, earned her the Crown. Melissa Cueto claimed third place in the open weight category.
