“Platinum” Mike Perry stepped into a bare knuckle boxing match for the first time Saturday night, and he was the main event at Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship’s Knucklemania 2. Perry fought in the UFC for years, and there were some, including his opponent Julian Lane, who doubted his ability to compete in bare knuckle boxing. Well, nobody is doubting Perry anymore.
“Listen man sometimes you gotta eat, you gotta pay the price in this world, my hands paid the price tonight, getting cracked up against his head,” Perry said after the fight, which went to the judge’s scorecards after five two-minute rounds. It was a unanimous 48-46 decision in favor of Perry.
Perry and Lane both came out swinging for the fences at the beginning of round one, and Perry had Lane wobbling early on. At one point they clinched up, and Perry was landing huge right hand uppercuts to the body. Both men were bleeding a lot by the end of the first round, Lane from his nose and Perry from the side of his eye.
The second round started just like the first with both fighters looking like ferocious beasts going in for the kill. Lane landed a few shots, including some nice uppercuts, but it was Perry who put an exclamation mark on the round when he landed an overhand right that sent Lane spinning a full 360 degrees.
Pacing became more important in the later rounds, and Perry looked to be more controlled and methodical with his attacks. At one point he landed a combination to the body, and then went straight to Lane’s head, causing more blood to squirt out of the cut on the bridge of his nose.
Lane started to show some urgency as the fight went into the final round. He cracked Perry a couple of times, and had Perry bleeding from both sides of his face around the eyes. When it was all said and done though, Perry was clearly the better fighter, and came out on top in what the ring announcer called “one of the greatest co-main events in BKFC history.”
Perry says he wants to fight the middleweight champion next, which is Thiago Alves, another long time UFC veteran. But Perry says his hands need to heal a bit first, “I'm ready to fight the champ for the title…my hands gotta get used to it, give me a few months, I’ll be ready for the champ.”
