Puerto Rico's Omar Rosario Gets W at Top Rank Boxing Event

January 15, 2022

If he isn’t the pride of Puerto Rico yet, it won’t be long before Omar Rosario achieves his goal.  The 24-year-old boxer won an unanimous decision over Raekwon Butler Saturday night at the Top Rank boxing event at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.

Heading into the fight, Rosario spoke to MILLIONS using the Personal Video feature and said, “we are ready to put in a showing Saturday night and demonstrate that I will be the future of boxing and I will be the new superstar of Puerto Rico.”  Well it is mission complete for Rosario, who was in control of the fight for all six rounds.

Rosario looked like he was shot out of a cannon in the first round, hyper-aggressive, throwing repeated jabs and 1-2 combinations.  He looked fast and powerful as he worked the body and the head.  Rosario had Butler against the ropes, dazed and looking like a deer in the headlights.  Rosario was relentless and it looked like he was going to end things in the first round, but Butler survived.

Rosario might have thought he had done enough, but the southpaw Butler was a tough opponent, and he started to find a groove in the second round, looking more comfortable and confident.  Rosario started slowing down, and by the mid-third round it was apparent he would need to show some resilience.

Butler figured out the timing of his counters and waited for Rosario to strike first, responding with some heavy shots of his own. The fourth round turned into a fire fight with Rosario leading the dance.  As the fighters went into the fifth, Butler started showboating and taunting Rosario, despite the fact that Rosario was still getting the better of the exchanges.

Those antics from Butler continued into the sixth and final round, but Rosario maintained his composure and couldn’t be thrown off his game.  With his superior speed and accuracy, Rosario made it an easy decision for the judges, and remains undefeated at 6-0.
